The company G. Poggi at Tivoli Terme has been working for many years in the field of extraction of Travertino Romano, since the last century and precisely since 1938. The Roman travertine at Tivoli Terme is a sedimentary limestone rock that has been widely used in building since ancient times, from the end of the Middle Ages onwards; it was so appreciated that it became the main stone of ancient Rome.
The colour of travertine depends on the incorporated oxides, being a very porous stone; the natural colour, however, varies from milk white to walnut with shades ranging from yellow to red.
The best travertine is located in the Tivoli area, the Latin people made it one of the main building resources of the city. Although typical of Lazio, it is also possible to find them in Tuscany, Umbria and the Marche region. In the Caprine quarry on the direction of Monticelli, the travertine is yellowish-white, harder and more compact than any other.
The travertine appears in large public works with a civil destination, at the service of the community, sculptors like Bernini discovered in travertine, the ideal material to make it sculpture and in this way enrich squares and palaces of Rome.
The cutting of the Roman travertine can be done in two different ways; the plate can be cut into a layer and a compact colour is obtained and the shades will be warm, natural and discreet, or against a layer, with this cut will highlight the veins of the stones that, thanks to the movement make you get designs with warm tones of color. With this type of cutting work is carried out with open and/or streamlined machines, this means following the design of the veins, this is used especially for floors and walls to create beautiful games of unique color.
